Side Headlock - Three Escapes
Three side headlock escapes. All are based on postural positioning and sequential actions. The techniques shown are demonstrated in their simplest form.
1. Stand up - key points, control both arms to protect neck and prevent being hit. Plant foot close and stand up with determination while looking up to the sky.
2. Pick up and drop - key points, move in close. Stand all the way up and drop.
3. Step behind and sit - key points, particularly useful if for much larger attacker. Place foot behind heel and sit, spread knees to kneel behind opponent and sink weight back. Pull head and legs to arch body to weaken grip. Finish with arm bar or stand up and leave area.
There are variations to these techniques not shown in this brief video.

Learning to ‘fall’ safely is a valuable life skill whether you’re a martial artist or not. In martial arts this skill is called Ukemi - 受身. Before teaching ukemi to a group of youngsters we will sometimes ask, “who has ever broken their arm?” Invariably a number of hands are raised. We then ask if anyone would like to share what happened we hear; “Fell off a climbing frame”, “fell off a swing”,...

Top applications, thx a lot! Are you still in contact with sensei Taira? Its long ago, that there was any content here in UA-cam. Greetings from Cologne, I appreciate your content since many years.
Thanks for following our content. Most of our content is for GKCglobal members, but every now and again we release more detailed videos like this one. No, we formed our own Int'l organization some years ago (GKCglobal).
😳 I had to look two times to notice its Paul Sensei! Impressiv 😎
Yes, many years ago 😀

As always very excellent explanation sensei

Especially Taekwondo practitioners need to see this. I am fed up with competitors kicking the sky in tournaments -.- #Taekwondo #Poomsae
Well, I mean, that's kind of what taekwondo is known for. I think high kicks have their place. My point is that in the context of a karate kata kicks are performed a certain way as part of a combative sequence.
@@GKCgoju not really. Taekwondo is a Korean karaté style, and is based on the Shotokan style. You can see the same problem in Shotokan competitions, especially WKF, where people would do Jodan Kekomi all the time, which is complete non-sense. All of the Jodan Kekomi should be Chudan Keage in Kata. Be it Taekwondo or Shotokan, people need to understand that kicking high is nice, but not in Kata, because it makes zero sense from a Bunkai perspective, as Kata is not for show.
Understood. For some reason I wasn’t equating taekwondo with kata.
@@GKCgoju juste search for "Koryo". Very popular Kata in Taekwondo competition. You will be vomiting at the kicking level. People don't understand the bunkai at all. They think it's gymnastics.
Useful explanation. Thx!👍
Glad you think so!
Sensei woke up and choose violence Oss❤

The oblique kick is one of the most practical, powerful, and devastating techniques in the kicking arsenal. The Savate version of it is called chassé frontal bas.
Thanks for sharing this info. regarding Savate.
Sensei 🙏🏽 one question did you know my Sensei Guy Kurose , he passed away 20 yrs ago , but I remember the GojuRyu school from Vancouver Canada would visit our school in Seattle from time to time ( Goju Ryu Uchiage Kai ) 🙂
I did not know him. Although I just googled him and he sounds like an amazing person.
@@GKCgoju Thanks Sensei that really means a lot that you learned about Sensei Guy he was my mentor and dear friend 🙏🏽

I've never actually thought about it. In pure striking sports or even just primarily striking sports like muay thai they often teach you "never" to cross your feet. The issue being leg kicks and counter-takedowns like foot sweeps. But you see the cross step not just in turn throws like the hip toss, but also in the kind of sweeps shown here. I just find that interesting, because it's not like this is telegraphing in the sense that it makes them impractical. It's just a good example of an unavoidable tell. Something that you both have to watch for when you're the one defending, and something you should work to set up and conceal when on the offensive.
Yes, the feet have a different role when at striking range, or grappling/throwing range.
Anything connected to "Yamaguchi "Goju is a joke.
Okaaay.
I’ve been emphasizing these exact concepts to my students for several months now. It’s something I’ve always done intuitively, but being a teacher it’s one of the things I’ve been able to put into words more recently. Excellent video as always. Thank you!
Good to hear.
As a school teacher for over 35 years, I have found that curriculums have PURPOSE BY DESIGN. Following the curriculum greatly impacts students overall personal growth and educational achievement... Thank you, Sensei for sharing an Invaluable aspect of Gojuryu karate. Steady On! Steady On!
You’re welcome.
I will never understand why this sort of educational curriculum (breaking down the REASONS for each of these exercises) are not more common place in classes for beginners, or at least intermediate students. Thank you so much for sharing this valuable information, Sensei! Continued success to you and your dojo!
Thank you. I would say because it is not widely understood. In my experience the various facets of karate are often taught as separate entities, rather than as part of an interconnected curriculum. Hence, junbi undo is often thought of as merely a calisthenic routine. Thanks for your comment.
Amen to that…
Hi Matt, indeed.
@@GKCgoju Thank you for the quick and precise reply, Sensei. I guess UA-cam does have its more positive uses as well, then;). Take care.
I’ve found UA-cam particularly useful for washing machine troubleshooting and repair 🤣
lol that coconut is clearly scored- why do you post such a fraudulent video on UA-cam?
Where else could I post it? Any ideas I’ll be grateful. Thanks.
btw, when you buy coconuts from the grocery store they often come pre-scored. Strangely this doesn't seem to make them easier to break, but when they do break they tend to crack along the score. There are plenty of videos of me, and people who follow my iron hand training method, breaking unscored coconuts if you're interested.
Good video. Knuckle push-ups scare beginners in my dojo
Glad it was helpful!
Fantastic. Thanks for these clarifications.
YOu are very welcome. I hope it helps.
I am a 79 year old Kyokushin student and our forms consist of Goju and Shotokan. It's a lifetime of training. I value these instructional videos. Wish we had them when I was 12. Thank you.

Fully Agree. I think as Obi is perfect Trainingtool for this reason. Thanks for explanation.
You're welcome. Do you use the belt as a training tool, and if so, what exercises?
@@GKCgoju Mainly just for this: Getting good feel of Tandem and the lower abdomen- and back-region in general -> by pressing muscles against it from inside, imaging belly, back and waist as sort of dynamical sphere - especially when doing breathing exercises, Sanchin and Tensho of course. Also watching (by feel) position and movement of the knot, moving down and up again during working all the technics. For me its a powerfull helping tool for imagine tandem and being aware of this all the time. (I noticed also: if i have no belt and do Karate exercises, i feel little weak 😂for real it needs much more concentration for doing good breathing, tension and release of muscles and all this stuff.) Sidenote: Maybe its some type of main reason behind japanese belts and its technics of artfull knots in general, i wonder some times. As a "Pointer" to this important region and sphere called Hara and especially tandem. If you know something about this, please share with me, if you like. Thanks for your work!
@@Foltore thanks for sharing that.
